During innovation projects, global buckling analysis is performed on Ampelmann systems. The models contain many beam and plate elements. Therefore, conservative methods are used based on engineering rules/codes. A more accurate, practical, method would be a significant improvement, which is the aim of this thesis.
The goal is to compare various engineering- and scientific methods to investigate the accuracy, propose a new method and develop the tools. The analysis will be based on an existing Ampelmann system of which FEA models are available in RFEM. Other tools that can be used are: MATLAB, Python, Excel.
The assignment is performed for the innovations department, which designs and delivers new innovative Ampelmann systems and services. You will be supervised by a structural engineer of the basic/detailed team and be in contact with the structural engineering community.
- MSc Mechanical / Offshore / Civil / Aerospace Engineering or similar with a structures background
- English and/or Dutch
- Duration of thesis: 6-9 months
- Experience of or interest in structural analysis, FEA software, preferably also programming
- A nice compensation

About the Innovations department
The innovations department designs and delivers new innovative Ampelmann systems and services. The department works in multi-disciplinary teams of young professionals. The department consists of several subdepartments: feasibility, concept, basic/detailed, production, reseach and development, and data services. The structural engineering community is a knowledge team consisting of several structural engineers working in various departments.
